Spirit at Work Unexpectedly
By

While lying in bed the other night I reflected on an experience I had many years ago.   It was my first exposure to spirit actively at work in my life.

When I was a new bride, my husband enlisted in the Army.  He took Basic Training at Fort Knox, then was sent to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi for nearly a full year of specialized training.

Once settled, we planned to live off base.  My niece and I arranged the drive down to look for a place where I could join him.  We found a small, but adequate, affordable, and clean apartment over a garage in the neighboring town of Gulfport.  It even had a bedroom window view of the Gulf of Mexico, half a block down the street.

On our last day there, we planned to leave early evening for the drive back to Dayton, since there would less traffic at night for driving home.

Sometime close to 1:00 a.m., on a very dark straight two-lane road where there hadn’t been any traffic at all, I noticed a semi-truck ahead swaying all around the road, then straightening as it resumed driving.  As I approached “that area,” I saw a large cow standing still in the middle of the road.  Naturally I slowed and drove around the cow which was all dark in color and difficult to see.  Continuing a short distance, I saw a dimly lit house on the right side of the road.

Ever an animal lover, I pulled into the short driveway, turned off the motor and told my niece I would be right back as I got out of the car and walked up to the lighted doorway.

The door was simply a screen and I found myself looking into the lighted living room.  There was a banister and staircase straight across the room.  I didn’t see anyone so said “Hello,” and waited a few seconds then decided to knock.  Expecting to see someone coming down the stairs I waited a few minutes and knocked a bit more boldly.  Again, no response.

Suddenly I heard the distinctive sound of a gun being cocked behind me as a man roughly asked, “Who the hell are you and what do you want?”

All the night noises ceased, and in the sudden silence I heard a voice coming out of my mouth and voice box but with a totally different sound than my own voice.  It spoke, saying authoritatively, and deliberately, “You stop that, you’re scaring me.”

Slowly and more quietly the man drawled, “Well, who are you and what do you want?”

Speaking in my normal voice now, I answered, “Well, your cow is standing in the middle of the road and has nearly caused two accidents.  I thought you would like to know.”

There was another silent pause before he said, “Lady, I don’t own no cow.”

” Well, probably you do know who owns it and I would think you would appreciate the information. Cows are expensive.”

With that I turned on my heel and walked back down the driveway to my car, where I found myself securely locked out. My niece had locked the car doors after I exited.  Finally, she leaned over and pulled up the button to let me in.

She and I have laughed many times through the years about “Lady, I don’t own no cow” wondering if that family thought it was as strange and funny as we did.

In hindsight I realized that spirit, either a guide or protective and loving relative had spoken through me with that calm answer when I was terrified at the sound of the gun being cocked.  It was my first experience with that phenomenon, even though as a child from my earliest recollection I can recall talking with my mom’s guide.  I certainly never expected that spirit could or would speak through and for me, in a definitely scary moment.

For both my niece and me, it was absolute proof that souls live on, that they can and do work in our lives today.

Isn’t Spiritualism wonderful?
