Several of us were discussing the term “speaking in tongues” recently so I looked it up.  Biblically it is addressed in First Corinthians in the New Testament, Chapter 14: 1-33.  Basically it boils down to the fact that if no one can interpret the tongues so that the congregation can understand what is being said it is worthless.  The reference also indicates that the tongues may be of another - but KNOWN language as of another tribe or people that isn’t local but CAN be interpreted.   
 
1st Corinthians Verse 19 states, “But in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding so that I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.”  (Quoted from the George M. Lamsa Bible).  Incidentally it reads basically the same in the King James Version.     
 
I have no experience with other churches, religions, practices or teachings.  I do know we have had Spiritual Entities in our circles or séances who have given blessings or healings in a language with which we haven’t been familiar but we did accept them and had the feeling of having been blessed at that time.  In my experience this is most frequently given by Native American guides, so I would imagine their language is most comfortable for them and could be interpreted by someone who was familiar with the language of that particular tribe. 
 
Because in our church, we believe we should be happy in the presence of the Infinite Spirit, we allow and enjoy humor and laughter! 
 
That is why at this point I will also mention that Corinthians, verse 34 of Chapter 14 also admonishes that….” women should keep silent in the church for they have no permission to speak, but are under obedience as is said in the law.”  Or, we should ask our husbands about meanings as it is a “shame” for women to speak in the church.  Clearly this was written in a time when women were still chattel!  

While Emanuel Swedenborg, Andrew Jackson Davis and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were stalwart Pioneers in Modern Spiritualism, it was the Fox Sisters who worked out the manner of communication with Charles B. Rosna, the murdered peddler, who led the way into our Modern Spiritualist Religion!  Also embraced were the teachings of Mary Cadwallader and Margery Crandon as well as many Ladies of Modern Spiritualism!
 
As I understand the term “speaking in tongues” is frequently encountered in Pentecostal Churches or Charismatic Christian Religions and is specifically designated when the language being spoken is a natural language previously unknown to the speaker but is acceptable to them whether it is interpreted or not.  The term for this is Glossolalia and the best definition of that word may indicate it comes from a language that is no longer viable or which may have come from an ancient civilization whose language is not currently well understood or interpreted. 
 
As far as I am personally concerned, if in our séances a guide offers to bless us with healing or a benediction in their own language, I am quite comfortable accepting what they bring as I am confident that only the highest and best guides and teachers join with us.   Isn’t that the reason for a prayer of invocation at the beginning of a religious service?  We always ask for Infinite Intelligence, or the God Force, to enter into our services, whether it be on Sunday or a circle/séance.  So long as we are in that vibration, we are always confident of total protection and guidance. 
 
We are not naïve; we realize there are lower or uneducated entities “out there” but until they have arrived at a higher level of understanding, they may not have access to our activities in any way. 
 
That is stated in our first Declaration of Principles:  “We believe in Infinite Intelligence” or as Lyceum classes teach children the first declaration; “We Believe in God.”

It is that simple.  Both for children and adults.  God, Infinite Intelligence.  When you ask for the highest and best, nothing else can manifest in your lives.
