Spiritualist Interpretation of Psalms by Rev. Frances D. Montgomery, NST, CM

You are aware that the Bible was basically written by men because the world was totally male dominant until fairly recent years.  You are also aware that women were chattels, often kept uneducated and rarely known as leaders much less as spiritual leaders.

Genesis was written by Moses and was completed in 1513 BCE meaning Before the Common Era.  Genesis covers a time period beginning approximately from 4,026 BCE until Malachi which was apparently completed 443 BCE.  The Old Testament took 1,079 years to write and covered some 3,583 years in duration.  Jesus was born in 2 BCE.  There are approximately 441 years from the end of the Old Testament to the birth of Jesus and there is no year numbered zero.

Because we are Spiritualists I have often wondered how some of my favorite Psalms would read if they were written by Modern Spiritualists.

As often as the scrolls have been translated I do not think it “sacrilegious” or wrong in any way to do this.  Therefore I would like to do the 23rd Psalm as a Spiritualist might read it.

Infinite Intelligence is my protector.  I shall not be afraid because I am never alone.
Spirit leads me to find peace and brings me to rest beside still waters.
Spirit restores my soul and leads me in paths of loving kindness for the betterment of my soul.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I shall fear nothing for God Force is with me.  Spirit is always with me and protects me.
Infinite Intelligence prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies and anoints my soul with peace.  My cup runs over with love.  Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life and I shall live in spirit forever.

Another favorite of mine is the 100th Psalm.

A Spiritualist might read it as:

Make a joyful noise to Infinite Intelligence, all souls.
Serve Spirit with gladness and come before them with singing.
Know that Spirit is Infinite.  We are in that presence always.  It created us and will always guide and protect us.
Enter that realm with thanksgiving, gratitude and praise for the knowledge we are never alone.
Spirit is good, forgiveness is everlasting and the truth of Infinite Intelligence will endure through all generations.

As Spiritualists we understand that we have free will and the opportunity to make our own choices.  Our seventh Declaration of Principles states “We create our own happiness or unhappiness as we obey or disobey Nature’s Physical and Spiritual Laws.”  We realize we are on the earth plane to learn and grow forward to oneness with the Infinite.  We rejoice in that knowledge.  We understand we have a loving God Force who is not vindictive or punishing.  Most of our problems are from our own wrong choices.  As we learn to handle situations more sensitively toward others we find our life path easier and more peaceful.  As we relinquish greed, hatefulness, distortion of truth, we are able to overcome many of the obstacles life presents and are capable of trusting and praying for the highest and best outcome of all situations because we know the Law of Love.
