God's Mansions by Rev. Frances D. Montgomery, CM, NST

According to Strong’s Concordance the word “Mansion” is mentioned only once in the entire Bible.  That reference is in St. John Chapter 14, verse 2.
The chapter begins:
1.    “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God believe also in me.
2.    In my Father’s house are many mansions:  if it were not so I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you.
3.    And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am there ye may be also.
4.    And whither I go ye know and the way ye know.”

I often wonder what that passage means to people.  Jesus specifically stated MANY mansions.  The word mansion derives from the 15th Century word “manse” which is the dwelling of a householder. (Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary)

Mansion, the place where people live during their lifetime, whether that lifetime is on the physical plane (and in today’s world people buy, sell, move and travel much more frequently than in other centuries!) – or their location during their stay in the Spirit World, between physical incarnations.

We purchase homes according to our financial ability, starter homes when we are younger, “moving up” to larger more expansive, expensive homes as we progress through life and our incomes increase.

Our Spiritual Homes aren’t dictated by our incomes!  Our spiritual homes are dictated by the worthiness of our souls.  They are built daily on the spirit realm according to our actions while on the physical plane.

Most of us are blessed to have centrally heated and plumbed homes many of which these days also have central air conditioning!  We aren’t living in hovels!  We have worked and earned the financial ability to live in physical comfort.
Let’s think about what we have earned as a home in Spirit!  Have we been kind and loving?  Have we helped others whenever we could?  Have we touched the lives of others who are alone, lonely, scared or sick?  Have we been gentle with our words, slow with our criticisms, generous with our ability to share?  Do we judge others while being sanctimonious and haughty from our Ivory Towers?  These actions both negative and positive will determine the mansion we will have earned when we arrive in Spirit!

We all know in our hearts who we really are, what we have done, how we have acted toward others throughout our lives.  We also know none of us is perfect.  We need to consider which way the preponderance of our acts has been stacked up.

We live in a physical material world.  We have all made mistakes and often can look back over our lives and realize exactly where we failed.  We can’t go back and change what we already have done.  We can only attempt to become “better” or more “Christ Like” as we live and learn from our life’s experiences.

Our best bet is to become aware immediately of who we are, ask forgiveness of those we have harmed, whether on earth if possible or if they are in spirt – we should still ask forgiveness of them through prayer – and try to do better every remaining day of our lives.

We can’t become despondent because we were wrong in the past.  We live and learn daily.  We must also learn to forgive ourselves as we ask Spirit to forgive us.  That is what is meant in the 23rd Psalm – “………. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”   A trespass is a violation of a moral or social ethic; a wrong or unlawful deed done for whatever reason.  We are asking Infinite Intelligence and those in the spirit world to forgive us those wrongs as we are willing to forgive others who have done us wrongly, unfairly or improperly.

If we can take to heart Jesus’ words we can attempt to become more like Him every day.  This is our task.
